"Forms of existence"

今は畑を耕すために耕運機を使いますが、かつては牛の力を借りていたように、人が動物の力を直に借りているある意味では原始的とも言える暮らしを知るために、モロッコで1ヶ月半の旅を行いました。
都市で生きる上で見えなくなってきている人と人以外の動植物とのプリミティブな関係性について考える上で助けになったのが、タイトルにもあるUmwelt(環世界)という考え方です。
Umwelt(環世界)というのはドイツの生物学者であるユクスキュルが提唱した、生物がそれぞれ独自の時間・空間として知覚し、主体的に構築した認識世界のことを指します。
生物を取り巻く一つの環境の中には、無数の生物が暮らしていて、その生物それぞれが環世界の中で生きています。そして環世界の内側からの作用が、環境に影響し、他の生物と複雑に絡み合った網の目のような関係性が広がっているのだと私は解釈しています。
この関係性の絡み合いを写真で捉えることはできないかと試みたのが、本シリーズの手焼きカラープリントの作品です。
撮影したネガから直接紙に印画するプロセスは、撮影した風景に暗室で出合い直す、旅路での再会のような感覚があります。暗室での写真との対話を通して、生物が環境の中に捉える"かたち"(知覚世界)について、改めて発見する場面がいくつもありました。

I traveled to Morocco for a month and a half to learn about a way of life that could be called primitive in a sense, in which people borrow directly from animals, just as we now use a tiller to plow our fields but used to rely on the power of oxen.
What helped me to think about the primitive relationship between people and non-human animals and plants, which is becoming invisible in urban life, is the concept of Umwelt (Circum-World), which is also mentioned in the title of the book.
The term “Umwelt” refers to the cognitive world proposed by German biologist Uexküll, which each organism perceives as its own time and space, and which it constructs on its own initiative.
Within a single environment surrounding an organism, countless organisms live, and each of these organisms lives within a ring world. I interpret this as a complex web of relationships that spread out with other organisms as the actions from within the ring world affect the environment.
This series of hand-printed color prints is an attempt to capture this intertwining relationship through photography.
The process of printing directly from the negatives to paper has the feeling of a reunion on a journey, of encountering again in the darkroom the landscape that was photographed. Through the dialogue with the photographs in the darkroom, there were many occasions when I discovered anew the "forms" (perceptual world) that living creatures capture in their environment.
“Between Sea and Land”

Cyanotypes works based on a group of lakes and marshes between sea and land in the ancient Roman town of Lattara in the south of France. Observation of lines drawn by plants near the water.

この作品は舞踏家と協働し、自然環境の中での踊りにおける身体と環境の相互関係を研究するプロジェクトです。- その土地の地形、大気、痕跡がどのようにダンサーの動きに"aford"するのか。- 風力や地熱、水といった自然の媒質によってできる地球の動きの形跡。この二つの対象に焦点を当てることで「動くこと/動かされること」について考察しています。
This work is a project to research the interrelationship between the body and the environment when dancing in a natural environment, in collaboration with a butoh dancer.- How do the topography, atmosphere, and traces of the land “aford” the dancer's movements?- The traces of the earth's movement created by natural media such as wind, geothermal energy, and water.By focusing on these two objects, the project examines “moving/being moved”.
“Correspondance”

枯れた花と朽ちたロープ割れたアスファルトの間から生えた植物折れた木の真下を照らす光太陽の下に晒される身体自然、人、そして人工物が変化する経過のコレクション。真逆と思われる要素の並置は、二元論の崩壊、つまりメビウスの輪のように裏表の境界が曖昧になっていくような展示を目指しました。
